Chess for Android

This application combines a powerful chess engine with a user-friendly graphical interface. It accepts moves via touch screen, trackball, or keyboard, and features an optional move coach that highlights valid moves and the last engine move. Full game navigation allows you to correct mistakes or analyze games, with import and export in FEN/PGN formats through clipboard, sharing, or file storage. A position editor lets you set up custom positions, and the app recognizes draws by stalemate, insufficient material, the fifty-move rule, or threefold repetition.

The engine offers various playing levels, including random moves, self-play, and free-play mode where the board acts as a magnetic chessboard. You can play either side and view the board from white's or black's perspective. The app supports UCI and WinBoard/XBoard protocols, enabling you to play against third-party engines or organize engine tournaments. Engines can be imported in OEX or Chessbase formats, or directly from SD card, with setup options like time control, pondering, infinite analysis, hash tables, multiple threads, endgame tablebases, and opening test suites.

Additionally, the app connects to external electronic chessboards such as Certabo, Chessnut, ChessUp, DGT, House of Staunton, or Millennium, and supports online play on FICS or ICC. Permission notes: storage access is only needed for saving/loading games to SD card, and location permission is only required for Bluetooth LE scan to connect to DGT Pegasus/Chessnut Air. You can disable any permission without affecting other features.
