The Procession to Calvary

The Procession to Calvary is a point-and-click adventure game set in a world constructed from Renaissance paintings. As a spiritual successor to Four Last Things, it combines classical art with absurd comedy. The holy war has ended, but the tyrant Heavenly Peter has escaped, and you must find him. Your journey will take you through a richly detailed landscape built from hundreds of different Renaissance paintings.

You will steal a ship, feed a donkey, compete in a talent contest, assist an inept street magician, sing, dance, play the flute, poke a man's face, hunt for treasure, and chat with God Almighty. The game features a traditional point-and-click interface with a verb coin interaction menu and a simple inventory. The artwork is sourced from masters like Rembrandt, Botticelli, and Michelangelo, seamlessly integrated into one consistent world. The soundtrack includes classical music from Vivaldi, Bach, and Handel.

The story is standalone but set in the same world as Four Last Things. You are equipped with a sword, and while you are discouraged from using it on people, you can murder anyone who stands in your way to skip puzzles. However, your actions may have consequences. The game is filled with surreal, anarchic comedy, treating lofty subjects with flippancy and taking gags about butts very seriously. While some jokes are ridiculous, the puzzles make perfect sense, adhering to a consistent internal logic. There are moments of surprising profundity, but don't read too much into it.
